MODULAR ACOUSTIC TILES MADE FROM RECYCLED PAPER
FROM WASTE TO WALL
HOW IT'S MADE
Our approach to working with paper was to combine paper-making strategies with an array of ceramic techniques that we knew well from our past experience. We noticed the similarity of pulp bath mixture to clay slip early in our exploration and we found immediate success in pressing, moulding and hand-sculpting with pulp. Paper Tiles were one of our early applications, using our ceramic tile making equipment that we also designed and built ourselves.
Since it was an invented material, the precedents for higher scale production didn’t exist, so we had to invent them ourselves. We were fortunate to work with a Canadian research and development facility, FP Innovations, who helped us to get the ball rolling with methods and production strategies. Afterwards, we spent many months of r & d time applying some of these ideas and techniques into practice and finally invented the custom machines that produce our paper tiles today.
The production of Paper Tiles is a simple, by-hand process. It begins with finding the right sort of paper. We source from local businesses who use a lot of blank, unmarked paper in their production.
The paper is divided into types and shredded and pulped. Colourants are weighed and added into the pulp bath for through-colour tiles. The pulp is then pressed into dies of each shape and then slowly dried to board-like hardness. Once the tiles are dry, they can be screen-printed, coated, and fire-proofed where necessary.
All Paper Tiles are made by the Papertile team in our Montreal studio, alongside all of our other products.
Papertiles perform similarly to some acoustic foams on the market. Adding in textured tiles further reduces sound reflection through wave dispersion. The tiles dampen noise while also acting as insulators and contribute to restful acoustics in residential and commercial spaces such as restaurants and office spaces.

Papertiles are easy to install. Being made from lightweight paper, most adhesives will work with the tiles, from double-sided tape to construction grade products, depending on the permanence of the installation.
Tiles can also be ordered with magnet backings for temporary installations.
Papertiles requires little to no maintenance, but can be vacuumed if necessary.
Papertiles are currently offered in 9″ HEX, 8.25″ SQUARE, and 8.25″ x 4.125″ SUBTILE formats. Other shapes, thicknesses and sizes will soon be available and can currently be custom ordered. Our large library of patterns and colours allow for unlimited combinations to be made.
Tiles are available in a gradation of colours from natural browns to bleached whites and have endless printing options. Papertiles changes as you add to them—they can be an effective accent with just a few tiles or an impacting, sound absorbent, treatment across an entire wall. Custom colours, thicknesses and shapes are all possibilities for your project.
